Professor Eisenhardt was celebrated for her prescient and extensive research in corporate entrepreneurship, primarily identifying factors that keep entrepreneurial ventures innovative and successful in varying and rapidly changing markets.
In her fascinating keynote speech, Professor Eisenhardt determined that swift decision-making based on an analysis of 3-4 alternatives and an ability to be nimble and adapt to change quickly are critical for a thriving entrepreneurial enterprise. Another interesting point she made was that the best businesses learn to operate on the “edge of chaos”— incorporating a solid structure of rules but not being too rigid— a concept she compared to “being the parent of a teenager” who has to be closely watched but not overly regulated.
According to Eisenhardt, the most effective management teams are very diverse, with a mix of genders, ages and ethnic backgrounds. This is very much in line with Secretary Clinton’s focus on promoting more women in business leadership.
Studies done by the World Bank and United Nations report that strong market growth among European companies is most likely to occur where there is a higher proportion of women on senior management teams. According to research by Forbes Magazine, firms with more women on their boards outperform their rivals with a 42% higher return on sales, 66% higher return on invested capital and 53% higher return on equity.
In addition to the luncheon, Professor Eisenhardt has spent the past several days discussing her findings with students, policymakers and government officials in order to promote goals of innovation and enterprise within Sweden.
The award is sponsored by the Swedish Foundation for Small Business Research (FSF) and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Nutek). In 2008 the Research Institute of Industrial Economics (IFN) joined FSF and Nutek to become the third partner in awarding the Prize.

To succeed in your professional life, formal education plays an important role. However, to succeed as an entrepreneur, you require a mix of knowledge and skills, which is not taught in business schools.
In this entrepreneur interview, Jaideep Deodhar from Simulytics talks more about the importance of entrepreneurship education. Last week, he talked about the boom of data analytics.
Jaideep is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIM Lucknow. He is also a visiting faculty at IIM Lucknow and other leading business schools in Pune and Mumbai.
Today he tells us why formal education of an entrepreneur is recognized by customers, but it is not the most important thing to succeed in business. Moreover, he also provides valuable pointers to budding entrepreneurs about how to transform their business acumen into value-creating enterprises.
Q: You became an entrepreneur after spending more than a decade in the corporate world. What were the greatest challenges that you faced while starting up?
Anyone who spends a long time in the corporate world is in some or all of the following situations:
- The person has achieved a good seniority within the organization. Leaving the seniority, and all the perks and recognitions that go with it can be a deterrent for many.
- There is predictability about one’s role that gets built over the years. This creates a “comfort zone” which many people struggle to break out of. Starting a new venture could mean abandoning some or all of the comfort zones.
- When one spends years in a specific role, one reaches a good level of efficiency and accuracy. In other words, mistakes are few. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks, and therefore about making mistakes. Many people do not want to face situations which are risky and therefore have a high chance of failure.
Q: You’re an alumnus of IIT-B and IIM-L. Do you think IIT+IIM combination makes better entrepreneurs and how?
The opportunity to study at IIT-B and IIM-L is something I value immensely. I cannot even begin to explain what it means to me, both personally and professionally. The theoretical concepts, the rigor, the thought process, ability to experiment and seek answers, and the eye for details, are the learnings I still value. Some of the instructors have made a huge difference to me. I learnt from my friends, seniors and juniors.
Yet, entrepreneurship is far more than formal education. It is true that customers tend to respect the right education, and very rightly so. Therefore, it reduces the entry barrier. However, beyond the early advantage, you are only as good as the last assignment.
Most formal education programs tend to underplay certain important pre-requisites for an entrepreneur:
- Ability to take risks – venture into something where success cannot be taken for granted, and the risk of failure is real and high.
- Desire to break away from the pre-defined path.
- Build personality traits such as patience, tenacity, humility, and respect.
I would not blame the institutions or the education programs. However, the end result, contributed in parts due to the external environment, is quite the opposite of these pre-requisites.
A graduate from one of the elite institutions is conditioned into believing that:
- You have worked hard to acquire the prized degrees. Now make sure that whatever work you do, has a near 100% chance of success, because you do not wish to lose the advantages that the degrees bring to you in terms of a corporate career.
- You have always shown success in most competitive (academic) situations such as all the entrance exams. Therefore, you do not wish to be in a situation where success cannot be taken for granted.
- The formal degrees ensure social respect, but only if they are followed by nice designations.
Q: What advice would you give to somebody else who wanted to start a similar business?
I would say the same thing as I would to anyone who wants to start any business –
- Figure out what you can do which is different, and better than what others can do. Everyone cannot do everything. Therefore, understanding one’s capabilities is important.
- Be patient
- Ensure that your family’s interests are not affected in any way.
- Drop fear of failure, take risks
- Be clear of what ethics and values mean to you, because they can have various interpretations. Do not do what is not “correct” according to you.
- While it is important to right-size the market, and the opportunity, do not spend too much time / effort in analyzing it.
- There is a difference between being careful, and being too careful. At the same time, there is a difference between taking risks, and being reckless. You will need to figure out these differences yourself.

We wanted to know that what our users think about entrepreneurship. What do they think what entrepreneurship is??
For this purpose we asked a question in our registration form related to “Intellectual Property Rights in India”. We are getting a tremendous response. Let’s see few very good replies, which will clear the term entrepreneurship.After seeing such great answers we thought to share this with our users…
The question that must send many of us thinking in the right direction. Many of us, as is evident from this forum, are obsessed with making money!.
But I think this mindset misses the mark. Building an enterprise that makes money for you is NOT about money. It is about building a Business: money follows. And this is what the entrepreneur does – he builds a business, that makes money.
But making money is not the only thing that he is doing. He is following his passion. The passion could be that he wants to establish a successful business.
Or (s)he wants to do some good for the humanity. So while serving the needs of other (s)he also establishes an enterprise that also makes money. I feel in the case of an enterprise, money is always a bye-product.
Entrepreneur has a vision for his business – how it is to be run, what direction it is going to take, how far (s)he wants to go, etc.
An entrepreneur has to be resourceful – for that (s)he needs to identify an area in which (s)he can excel. Nobody can excel in everything. There is always something in which you will excel; there are many areas in which you won’t! So you have to identify your strengths, which is identifying your interests – which is akin to knowing yourself. Only a self aware person can be a successful entrepreneur.
An entrepreneur has to be single minded. (S)he should follow her ‘vision’ with single minded ‘passion’. (S)he should not be distracted by minor distractions and major or minor failures along the way. It requires one to be ‘determined’.
There might be and definitely are some other qualities. But these are the basics – the ‘must haves’.
The capacity and willingness to undertake conception, organization, and management of a productive venture with all attendant risks, while seeking profit as a reward.
In economics, entrepreneurship is regarded as a factor of production together with land, labor, natural resources, and capital. Entrepreneurial spirit is characterized by innovation and risk-taking, and an essential component of a nation’s ability to succeed in an ever changing and more competitive global marketplace.

I think now-a-days everyone just tries to just take mba degrees after engineering . But how can be business n core skills be taught. It needs to be in your blood. Many few people after taking mba degree actually become enterpreneur or do business. Firstly you must be good with your engineering core and basic skills and then you must be able to market/sell your invention/innovation/products in a good manner,which makes a real and able enterpreneurship. Entrepreneurship for me has 2 parts.
First is to make sure that the responsibilty that is vested upon is handled with due care and striving to improve the way of doing things.
Secondly the person responsible should add more value to his business or work by either bringing in new concepts or bringing dynamics in the existing concept if newer product areas is not the focus of the person.-Ravi Agarwal
